Network Requirements
What your network must allow so players can pair, download content and stay connected.
Players only make outbound connections to Stratos. You don’t need to open any inbound ports or give players public IP addresses. This page is for whoever looks after your network.
What players need
Section titled “What players need”| Need | Detail |
|---|---|
| HTTPS (port 443) to Stratos | Your Stratos address, for example stratos.ots-signs.com. All pairing, content, play logs and screenshots go here. |
| WebSockets over HTTPS | A long-lived connection to the same host gives instant commands and live status. If WebSockets are blocked, players fall back to regular check-ins and still work, only slower to react. |
| DNS | Normal name resolution. |
| Correct date and time | Secure connections fail if the clock is badly wrong. Allow NTP (UDP 123), or let the device sync from your network. |
Media, layouts and widget files are all delivered through the Stratos address itself, so you don’t need to allow any separate storage or CDN domains.
Bandwidth
Section titled “Bandwidth”Players download each file once and keep it, so ongoing use is light: small check-ins, plus downloads when you publish or add new media. Plan for bursts when many screens receive a big video at once. Stagger large publishes if your connection is slow, or schedule them for a quiet time.
Ethernet is best. If you must use Wi-Fi:
- Use a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network with a strong, stable signal where the screen is.
- Open networks and password-protected networks work. Networks that need a web sign-in page don’t.
- On Android TV the player shows Connect this TV to your network so you can join Wi-Fi before pairing.
Checking from a device
Section titled “Checking from a device”If a player can’t pair or goes offline:
- From a computer on the same network, open your Stratos address in a browser. It should load.
- Make sure nothing is blocking
httpsto that host, and that WebSockets are allowed. - Check the device’s date and time are correct.
- See Player Troubleshooting.
For IT teams: allow-list summary
Section titled “For IT teams: allow-list summary”- Outbound TCP 443 to your Stratos hostname (HTTPS and secure WebSocket).
- Outbound UDP 123 (NTP) and DNS.
- No inbound rules required.
